A controversial issue regarding whether the
most effective way for a nation to progress is to improve its schools has been
ongoing. Several opinions arose, and I cannot agree the idea that the most
effective way to develop a country is to improve its schools for two essential
reasons: costs of improving schools outweigh benefits, and there are better
areas for investment.
To start the argument, costs of improving
schools outweigh benefits of improving school. The efforts to improve schools
are very expensive because it includes not only quantitative improvement such
as facilities but also includes qualitative improvement such as making curriculum
and hiring more teachers. However, such efforts could not necessarily produce
tangible results. For example, Korea spends tremendous money on education than
any other countries, but it does not rank first in education. Rather, Finland
ranks first in education although they do not spend money on investing on education.
In this regards, costs of improving schools outweigh benefits.
On top of that, there are definitely better
areas for investment than education. This is due to the fact that security and
energy concerns are more important in today’s world. In supporting my view,
according to a recent study, it shows that countries with strong military and
vast energy reserves such as US are regarded as the most stable counties. On
the other hand, countries without strong military and vast energy reserves such
as India are not regarded as stable countries.
To sum up, costs of improving schools does not
necessarily produce tangible benefits and there are better fields for
investment than education. In this regard, I cannot agree the idea that the
most effective way to develop a country is to improve its schools.
