It has been said, not everything that is learned is contained in books. Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? why? |
An outgoing debate exists whether the knowlegde from experience is better than the knowledge from books or not. Regarding this controversial issue, I firmly feel that the knowledge from experience is better because it is more understandable and belivable.
First of all, we can understand things better when we actually go through it. Many students try all their best to memorize key-words of the chapter as many as possible to get a good score in their exam. However, most students memorize words without knowing its meaning. Take me as an example, I learned about 'Culture Shock' when I was in middle school. Unluckily, I couldn't understand what it means. On the other hand, when I went to America as an exchange student, everything was different. In my native country Korea, every morning we eat rice and soup. On the contrary, in my host country America, they usually eat cereal and bread. Not only eating habit but also school system was totally differnt. Students stay in one class whole day and teachers are changed for each classes in Korea. But in America, students move to different teacher's class for each period. As you can see, compare to the knowledge from the book which I just got the image about the word, I understood more in depth with my own experience. After 1 year of experience, I could truly understant the word 'culture shock'.
Also, the knowledge we gain from own experience is more belivable. Historians tend to hide and exaggerate things when they interpret history for their own profit. Therefore, sometimes we find things that are different from what we learned from text books. For example, Korea and japan were not in a good atmosphere since long time ago. Therefore, Japanese government exaggerated their history to make them look more honorable and justify their intrusion of Korea peninsular in 19th century. I was born in Japan, so I went to school there. It said there are 2 statues of dragon in Korea which head to Japanese palace. And it also said it is meant to be revere Japanese government. However, I found this wrong later when I went to Korea. There was actually one statue of dragon, and it was built to protect our country from Japanses intrusion. Our ancestor didn't want to be under of Japanese control and the dragon signified this spirit very well. This completely contrasted the knowledge from Japanese textbook that Japan ruled Korea because of Koreans' solicitation.
To sum up, everyone may hold a different view on this issue. However, I absolutely suppor the prospective that the knowledge from one's own experience is better than the knowledge from books. |
