As a teacher, I have experienced several times as to whether I should present my personal opinions about political and social events. Whenever I confront the issue, I would feel frustrated and confused because it is not an easy task to have balanced perspectives about the issue. Nontheless, I firmly believe that teachers should teach and express their political and social points of view because these viewpoints is about the real world, and it can contribute to balanced and diverse opinions of children.
The first benefit of expressing teachers' perspective is because their viewpoints are about the real world students should live by, not about an ideal world. For example, when I was in high school, all most all teachers, especially history teachers, virtually kept saving their words when there was military coup in Korea. Since many people were arrested by authorities, it seemed that they were afraid of getting arrested. After graduation, when I went into university. I was shocked at the different history about the military coup. Were my teachers liars? Probably not. However, I still cannot help considering them as incompetent teachers because they failed to show their true ideas about the real world and I had to understand the past history in a totally different point of view.
Another significant issue that related to the issue is that teacehers' political and social opinions can contribute to the more diverse perspectives of children. Just as if input is one-sided, stilted, and not enough, it is hard to expect outcome will be better than input, if teachers adhere to one side of knowledge, after all, it will deprive children of holding diverse and different ideas with respect to political and social matters. In addition, as teachers role is so significant-excellent role models, children also are easily influnced by their teachers. For example, as a rule of thumb, children who have been schooled in private institutions tend to have consevative positions, whereas kids in public shools are more liberal. Although this is not colclusive evidence, there is at least one convergent point that teachers' role is not a thing that can be trifled with. If is is true, it is necessary for teachers to encourage children to have more balanced points of view. If not, it will eventually devastate children's potential(이부분은 잘 기억나지 않네요 조금 헤매다 보니) that may contribute to our society and politics.
