Many of us believe that young people have nothing valuable to teach older people. However, that is not always the case. Young people can teach older people about new technology, popular culture, and current social issue.
Young people are usually better than older people at using new forms of technology. For instance, children these days become familiar with computers. Older people can learn how to use computers from children. In addition, many older people have difficulty learning to use a videocassette recorder, while for young people this is usually easy. I taught my grandparents how to use a VCR when I was thirteen, and now they often use it without any problem.
Secondly, older people are usually not familiar with popular culture, and young people can help here too. For example, most older people don't know much about popular music such as hip-hop and rock. When young people teach them about it, however, they will come to enjoy. In my case, when I introduce my grandmother to some of my favorite music, and now she and I listen to it togather frequently.
Lastly, there are some serious social issue that older people may don't know. Today's children have grown up knowing about AIDS. Although this is serious social issue these days, however, older people don't know much about it because AIDS wasn't serious problem at that time. By talking about them with young people, older people will know much about it.
All in all, I truly believe that there are something young people can teach older people such as new technology, popular culture and social issue that currently happens. When young people teach them about those things, then we can expect that they are more close to each other. |
