Giving a birth to a baby, this is all that takes for a couple to be parents. However, becoming 'good' parents is not easy like this. There are a lot of parents who are not actually eligible for being 'good' parents. The list of the qualities that good parents should have will need many pages of notes. Among those qualities, I think the good financial condition and the mind of non-interference are the most two important characteristics for parents.
Although I do not want to mention it as a significant qualification of good parents, it is hard to deny the importance of economic status of the parents. Most people in the world are living in societies working under Capitalism. To raise children in such an environment, they need decent amount of money. To give an example, educating the children takes a huge amount of money. In order to provide their children good education, the parents should offer good private tutors, pay the tuition, and spend a fortune for extracurricular activities. Without such financial support, it would be hard for the children to survive in the jungle of harsh competition. Therefore, it is undeniable that people need to have at least certain amount of money to be good parents.
On the top of that, good parents leave their children to do what they really want to do. I have seen many parents who mistakenly think that their sons and daughters belong to them and they can treat their children whichever way they like. This is, of course, far from being true; each child is independent person who have the ability and the right to decide his or her own way of life. Let me talk about my personal experience. Unlike ordinary parents, my parents did not force me to study hard. As a result, I could have the chance to think about studying with my own reason, and now I love to study even when there is no exam or assignment. Thus, it is important for parents to let their children to find and do whatever the children want to do--of course, unless it is immoral or illegal. So I believe it would be enough to show not interfering with the children's lives is important to be good parents.
Being in economically good state is a condition not just for being happy oneself, but also for being good parents. And not interfering with other's lives is an important principle treating one's own children, too. I believe these are the two crucial qualities for good parents. |
