Last year, I got admission for the linguistic department in a graduate school. Although I did not major in linguistics in undergraduge school, I could get admission from the school. Even better, I was so delighted not because I was accepted, but because I felt that I could anything that was not my forte. Likewise, if you try new things, there will be many advantages because the dynamic attitude toward challenging new things will lead you to success, and more importantly, you will get more job opportunities than others.
The first benifit from challenging new courses is that you will form a strong habit to try new things and in the end it will guarantee your ultimate success. Conversely, when you are accustomed to escape from difficulties and problems, you will reinforce negative attitude to everything and certainly it will devastate your life. For example, if you do not try new courses, at first, you will feel secure when you take a course in your department. However, in the real world, the story is totally different. Do you think it is possible for you to remain in the same position? or your boss likes the person who knows only one specific arena? Probably not. You will have to be faced with many difficulities and unexpcted situations all the time. In this competitive environment, if you insist on avoiding tricky matters, it is certain that you fall behind and never get a change to be promoted in the real world. On the other hand, when you are used to difficult tasks, your postive attitude to challenging tasks will make you feel comfortable and after all you find a breakthrough to solve the matter. As such, forming such good habits in university contribute to your later success in the real world.
In addition to the strong positive attitude from challenging unfamiliar courses, the more important advantage is that you become more well-rounded person through the difficult courses. Whether a well-rounded person is good or not is still on debate. Nevertheless, in effect, it is undeniable that a well-rounded person has more broad knowledge and it ensures that the person will be likely to have more job opportunities in the end. Let's take my experiene for example. When I was in my university, I took the diverse courses even double majoring such as international politics, English language, and business management. Although I was not exceptional in GPA, in fact, I got a hundred job opportunities from various companies including some schools. I was so lucky that I could choose one company that offered me the best. As such, exposure to diverse courses can guarantee your bright future in terms of the best job you will be offered.
All things considered, it is evident that there are more advatages in challenging unfamiliar courses over confining yourself in a limited sphere because in the end it will reinforce positive attitude toward difficult tasks, thus leading you to a well-rounded person. Grades, I think, is just one aspect of humans because people cannot be judged by their grades, just as we cannot judge a book by its covers. |
