The Mayans
To understand the mystery of the Mayan language, you must first understand a bit about the people who created it. The Mayans, also called the Mayas, are a large group who today live mainly in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Honduras an El Salvaor.
By some time between A.D 200 and 900 the Ancient Mayans had built large cities on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and in other parts of Central America. They were not the firts civilization in that area. However, they were surely one of the most advanced. They created immense communities, beautiful art, and a complex written language.
Mayans built palaces, plazas, and temples. They even built ball courts.
They Mayans had an agriculture based on corn, beans, and squash. In fact, our modern corn comes from the maize that was grown in the tropical parts of Mexico. Maize was vital to Mayan culture and appears in many myths. The people were good farmers. They used irrigation to water their crops. They found a way to farm on hills by building platforms-or terraces-for crops.
However, the Mayans were not just farmers. They had well-organized political and religious systems. They understood mathematics and astronomy. They used these sciences to calculate the cycles of the moon, eclipses, and the position of planets. In addition, they had a very precise calendar. The Mayans recorded much of whay they knew in books.
The books were made from tree bark.
