I am against the argument that books are a better source of joy than movies. There are two reasons for this: first, using videos and audios, films provide more vivid experience than books. Second, films lasts only two hours or so in order to keep audiences from being bored, whereas books demands so long time that they often make readers sleepy. In this essay, I will explain the reasons in detail and prove the superiority of films to novels.
First and foremost, movies capitalize on various state-of-the-art image and sound techniques to capture viewers’ eyes and ears. Considering the short history of movie industry, the development of its skills is amazing. 3D images, motion capture, 5.1 surround sound, computerized animation, and so forth, all of these are to entertain and amuse audiences. When people visit movie theaters, they may well anticipate exciting and fun moments that those advanced methods of movie making provide. Meanwhile, books appeal to readers’ imagination and produce pleasure and enjoyment in their own way. On the whole, the intensity of fun and vividness that movies create through video and sound effects is far stronger than book’s.
Most movies are about two hours long. It is deliberately settled to prevent the audience from boredom or tiredness. The whole story is economically packed within that time and redundant parts are cut for the speedy progress of the story. Movies are designed for audiences not to be distracted. On the other hand, a novel demands readers more than several hours in most cases to finish it. Novels usually try to describe minute details of circumstances, character’s thoughts, and events. Although they help readers understand what the writer tries to express, they often cause readers to feel tired and bored. Sometimes, it seems like they are written just to fill the quantity as a book without contributing to the fun of reading.
In conclusion, I disagree with the idea that the joy of reading novels outweighs that of watching films. That’s because first, the vividness of films eclipses the imagination of novels. Second, the length of a movie is adequate for audience to feel fun, whereas novels contain too many details hindering readers from being fun. |
