There is an ongoing debate over whether or not university athlete department should receive the equal amount of fund as university libraries do. Although some people might argue that universities should focus solely on academic education and that they should not waste money on funding the sports teams, I hold a different opinion based on two very important reasons: the school will have an advertising effect by their sports team drawing attention to potential students to their school and it will also help students in general to stay physically and mentally healthy.
To begin with, by supporting their athletic department, universities can attract prospective students without the help of advertizing their school on television or through any other media, which will also save a lot of money for the school. Considering the fact that many high school students love sports such as foot ball or basket ball, it is not hard to imagine that they would be interested in schools that have the winning sports team. By financing school's sports division better, as in giving the same amount of money as to the libraries, the school athletic teams will achieve better results in their sports games and build a more positive image of the school gathering more potential college students toward their university.
Another reason why funding athletic departments better is necessary is that this will ultimately help students to stay physically and mentally healthy. Giving more money to sports department means that the college will get more sports equipments and that the environment of their grass field and gym will also improve. This will allow students to work out more often. This assumption is backed up by a research that was conducted by Korea Health Organization in 2005. According to the research, more than 30 percent of the college students who attended schools that have a well-equiped gym exercised regularly, where as only 15 percent of students did whose school was otherwise. It was also revealed that students who were more fit physically, had better test scores as well. In addition, their stress level was also significantly lower by 40 percent than those students who never worked out. Therefore, giving out the same amount of money to the schools athletic department can positively influence their students physical and mental well-being.
To sum up, although everyone may hold a different position on whether universities should give the same amount of fund to their athlete department and libraries, my position is that it is necessary to do so. After all there are so many benefits the school can reap by simply funding their school athlete division properly.
