"Leader is not born, but made." This famous saying implies that the characteristics of leaders can be trained. In fact, many educational strategies such discussion oriented class and advanced class has been introduced to make favorable educational environment for potential leaders. Giving same grades to members of one group after given a group project would be a good strategy to raise one of most important characteristics of leader, a sense of responsibility.
First of all, students can have opportunity to have a sense of responsibility through being given same grades for their group project. Admittedly, contribution of each students to the outcome could be disproportional. Some might complain that free rider takes only benefits without putting any efforts. However, some can see the chance to lead the team and make the free riders to contribute to the outcome. Unfortunately, since that is a common situation you face in business world, you should learn how to deal with the problem of free rider and lead other students to produce better results. For instance, you can learn about free rider problems and the strategies to overcome when you manage your own business in many business school in privileged colleges. That shows how important to deal with that problem for students who want to be a leader. And it also shows how unconvincing the complaints that each member of a group have to be given different grades by valuing their contribution to the project. On top of that, giving same grades to members of a group would enhance the quality of outcome and students' knowledge base as well. Each students may have different strengths and weaknesses. One of the reason why teachers assign group projects is that through the projects the students are expected to learn from each other and to make up their weak points. Assuming that the students can be given different grades for their projects, students would consider each other as competitors. In that atmosphere, cooperation would not be happened. Here is a study reflecting the phenomenon. According to a study conducted by Yonsei university in Korea, approximately 70% of students said they would not share their resources fully with other members if the professor give different grades by valuing each students contribution. Thus, giving different grades to members of a group would deprive students of opportunity to enhance both their own knowledge base and the quality of the outcome of projects.
To sum up, giving invariable grades would provide good chances to learn about responsibility and to improve knowledge about the subject of the project. Since the benefits of the teaching skill would quite obvious, it is better to be recommend to adopt the strategy in many schools.
