In this rapidly changing world, gaining up-to-date information is what makes a person competitive. Thankfully, owing to developments in technology, people are always in reach of complete information all over the world. However, one thing people should always keep in mind is that they must not rely on one source to stay informed; rather, they should use a variety of news sources. This is mainly because it prevents people from obtaining biased viewpoints. Also, people can have balanced knowledge in many fields.
To begin with, obtaining information from a single source makes people narrow sighted. As most of the news sources have their own stakes, their points of view on the world are under the influence of their stakeholders. In this sense, being exposed to many news sources can help people maintain balanced viewpoints. The best example is how different sources depicted the Iraq war. When the war broke out, those media outlets which were against the war described America as a rutheless and brutal invader. They showed how lives were taken away by American soldiers via on-the-spot broadcasting. On the contrary, those whose interests were related to America portrayed the war as a move to keep the world at peace. In this case, watching only one media source can make a person hold a one-sided opinion on the Iraq war.
Not only that, people can possess a broader range of knowlege on various subjects through reading many news sources. Since each media outlet has its own specialization, it is inevitable that people can only obtain a limited amount of information through one news source. To illustrate this point, I used to enjoy reading _The Economist_. By reading the magazine, I was updated on many social issues and thought it was enough. However, while practicing for my university interview, I realized that I was having difficulty explaining my opinions on education issues. It was due to a lack of related information and terms necessary to construct my answer. As a result, I subscribed to another journal which specialized on education, and I enriched my knowledge with it.
To sum up, I definitely believe that people should make use of a number of news sources to remain informed. This is largely because it enables them to possess an impartial point of view on an event, and broad knowledge on various topics. In this modern world, people who survive the fierce competition will be those who bear this in mind. |
