The reading passage says it is nurture which has greater influence in determining a person’s personality. But, the lecturer refutes this idea by saying nature is the primary factor for influencing a person’s personality. He states 2 reasons for this claim.
First of all, the reading passage discusses that children become alike with their parents. For example, a child whose parents are doctors, the child has a high probability to become a doctor as well. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that kids are not heavily influenced with their parents. He gives the example of the orphan who has a high intelligent quotient being adopted by an average IQ parents. Though, the parents have an average IQ, it doesn’t influence the child’s IQ.
Secondly, the reading provides that when we are young, we are controlled by what we see. It mentions that certain mental diseases could be classified as learned behavioral disorder. Conversely, the lecturer says one’s DNA is the most important part in determining a person’s personality. He gives the example of twin kids who have same exotic phobias for water when they reached the age of 13.
