People learn more by watching television than by reading books.
There might be different opinion over whether people learn more by watching television than by reading books. Personally, I strongly disagree with this statement for the following two reasons. First, books deliver more information and detail than TV. Moreover, time-pressed modern people read books to get information during commuting time.
To begin with, books are efficient media in that they can provide full contents and detail to readers. Some people might say that watching TV is time efficient to get information because it delivers summarized news. However, this summarized information prevents readers from understanding the full stories. Contrary to this, books offer more information in depth for readers. For instance, a lot of TV programs deliver the severe environmental destruction in the South Pole. However, TV programs cannot describe and explain what causes the environmental destruction which needs more scientific description. This is because TV simplifies information it presents due to the different levels of education of its potential audience. It was after reading books on environment, that I could finally understand the cause of thinning ozone layers in the South Pole. Freon gas which is used in refrigerator is one of the main reasons to make ozone layer thinner. Without the help of the books, I could not understand the whole process and detail in the issue of environmental destruction. In this sense, books play a key role in providing more information rather than TV.
In addition, books are efficient media for time-pressed modern people because they can read books when they commute. Today, people are driven by their hectic schedules. Thus, they have no enough time to focus on TV, because it is bound to its running time. However, people can read books commuting to and from their work places due to books’ ease access. According to the recent research released by the Korean National Research Center, more than two thirds of the surveyed people mentioned that they get important information from books rather than TV. Based on this study, they usually read book on bus and train when they are commuting. After they get back home, they spend their most time with their family member talking about what happened at schools and works. Therefore, there is no enough time watching TV. In fact, commuting time plays a pivotal role in allowing modern people to have a time to read books. In this regard, books enable people to get more information than TV.
In sum, I firmly disagree with the statement that people get more information by watching TV than reading books. This is because books contain a significant amount of information than TV. Furthermore, people can easily get books in their commuting hours due to its portability. All in all, the power of books to get information should be regarded highly.
