An intriguing topic of discussion at hand is that whether environmental issues have improved by people's care. It may seem true that care of people was no use in that issues; however, there appears to be too much absurdity to argue that the aforementioned statement is true. Although some people hold different ideas and opinions, I personally insist that care of people has really improved the environmental issues on account of two reasons: enacted laws and media effects. To begin with, governmental enactment for preserving environment make people act for environment. The governments have cared about keeping environment clean since a long time ago, and established many laws for it. People started keeping the laws in their mind because they have to pay fines if they do not follow the rule. Indeed, a survey recently conducted by the Institute of Korean Sociopolitical Studies(IKSS) suggests that this phenomenon is prevalent in Korean society. IKSS surveyed ten thousand Korean between age twenty and forty along with questionnaires. Furthermore, in-depth interviews of a thousand participants show seventy percentages of people acknowledging that they care about whether their acts might negatively influence. Also, they admitted that they do so since the laws have been enacted. This result clearly illustrates the positive effect of governmental efforts.
On top of that, media bring the environmental issues to the surfaces of our society. As this society has been more and more complex and industrialized, the media have gotten more and more power, in that everyone can easily connect internet and see the news. Media have showed a number of environmental crimes and causes of them. People have been more care about the issues as they counter the issues everyday in media. A study was conducted by the Department of communications in Seoul National University(Seoul, South Korea), to determine whether the media can affect people's behaviors. Two groups were monitored; One group was consisted of people who watch TV over an hour everyday, and another group was consisted of people who not. They were asked some questions about to which extent they care for the environment. From the questions, it showed that the former group got higher score than the latter group. Moreover, the former group answered that they learned about how they should behave to preserve environment while they were watching TV. It definitely demonstrates the media have impact on the environmental issues.
To sum up, taking effort of government and media into consideration, it is reasonable to claim that the environmental issues have been really improved. In this regard, it can be assuredly said that people should put more efforts to those problems. |
