In order to lessen the stress of students and offer a wide range of experiences, universities put emphasize on sport activities as much as academic fields. As the importance of being healthy rises, studying is not considered as valuable as in the past, which leads to reducing investment on libraries and academic facilities. However, studying is still the most important factor of student's lives and students spend more time in the library. Therefore, universities should fund greater amount of money on libraries than sports department.
To start with, studying outweighs playing sports, especially when the students look for jobs. While attaining a good sports skill would be pleasing, it does not help them to succeed in their lives. Being an adult and entering society, they are judged on their academic skills like grades or amount of knowledge they possess. FOr example, my sister was talented at baseball and played it everyday instead of reading books or gaining knowledge, when she was in college. Graduating from college, she searched for a job for 2 years but no company wanted to hire her. The problem was although she was healthy and had surprising career as a baseball player, she could not write formal essays properly, did not have any language skill and lacked the ability to arrange documents, which were imperative for working in the company. Thus, she failed in achieving satisying job that se longed for. Likewise, students should take studying more serious than playing sports.
Moreover, university students spend more time on school library than on the playground. Distributing the money to departments, what we should take into account is how often students use the facility. While playing sports is optional for students and even not enjoyed by some of them, staying in library is almost mandatory for studying properly, because they have to search for knowledge from books and study for tests. To illustrate this point, the resesarch was taken by Seoul University in 2008 to monitor how their students spend their time. It was found out that 70 percent of students go to library for at least 3 hours a day for their homework or cramming for exams. In contrast to this, 20 percent of students participate in sports clubs only an hour a day, because they are busy concentrating on studying. This clearly shows that majority of students need libraries to be updated consciously because they use it often.
In brief, universities should invest more money on their libraries than sports, because studying is certainly more crucial factor in student's lives and they utilize their libraries more. Universities should weigh which decision can benefit their students the most and make a desirable choice of developing their libraries. |
