▶ Your Answer : Some people may argue that the fundamental purpose of watching televisions is to get entertained. However, I think televisions should be informative for several reasons. To begin with, people cannot always be selective on the TV programs. What I mean by this is that people often get misguided by watching the TV shows; children may be exposed to some age-restricted shows, and even adults can end up in watching inappropriate shows. The reason for there being so much inappropriate television shows is that those shows try to entertain people exceedingly. One research showed that over 60 percent of high school students have watched television shows that they consider entertaining, even if the shows are not allowed for their age. After all, television being used as a tool of entertainment can misguide people and; therefore, should be used for other aims rather than entertainment. Next, television nowadays work as the substitute for radios and books. Since the modern technology has evolved, people rarely attain information from books or radios; instead, they watch television to catch up with the current news. Because of this, it is a sure thing that television should be instructive rather than entertaining. To further illustrate this statement, I would like to discuss my personal experience. When I was ten years old, there was a natural disaster called Tsunami that stoke my neighborhood. At the time, we were not informed that Tsunami was heading toward where we live; however, when my family turned on the television, there was a news talking about the Tsunami. Watching the news, we ran from the neighborhood and could avoid the natural disaster. If the television were displaying the entertaining shows only, instead of the news, we could have actually died because of Tsunami. To sum up, television shows that are only entertaining but not instructive can misguide people. Also, television should be instructive since most people use television as the source of getting information. In this regard, I assure that television should be used to instruct people rather than to entertain them.
