Most people think that exams only cause the competition among the students who want to get a higher grade. However, I strongly believe that exams are the most useful tools because exams encourage students to pay attention to the lecture and force students to review some materials that learned in the classes.
To begin with, exams allow students to concentrate on their lecture, due to getting good grades. Many students get a low grade because they do not pay attention to their teachers in the lecture. My elder sister can be an example, when she was first grade in middle school, she really wanted to go the college, Seoul national University, the best university in Korea, so she must do well in exams. For this reason, she always concentrated on the lecture and actively took part in student’s discussion. Also, if she had some questions, she goes to his academic advisor for explanation. By doing so, she got a good point in school and went to the major college in Korea.
Furthermore, exams force students to review previous lessons in order to improve and maintain their understanding of the subject. To get a good grade in the exam, reviewing the lecture is mandatory to students. For example, when I was a freshman in college, I failed the exam. This is because I didn’t review the materials learned from lectures and only played with my friends. In the end, I got “F” grade on some courses which hard for me to fill up the credit in the summer semester. I took a very hard time to take a course in the hot summer. If I had worked hard first time, I would not have a difficulty to attend a class. After this, I usually listen carefully professor’s lecture and do well in exams.
In short, some people argue that exams have some negative effect to students. However, exams encourage students to more pay attention to lecture and review course’s material they learned. For these reason, the exams are an important tool. |
