Should smoking in public places be banned? |
There is a serious debate about whether smoking should be banned in public places or not. Some people claim that in a free society, people should be able to do whatever they want, including smoking in public places. However, I believe that smoking in public places should be banned because it is harmful to other people’s health, and increase others’ chances of smoking themselves. To begin with, smoking in public places not only risk smokers’ health but people in the same places as well. It is a known fact that smoking causes various diseases including lung cancer, respiratory breakdown, etc. In other words, smoking is very harmful to health and shortens people’s lives. Some people choose to smoke despite these defects; however, they should not endanger other’s health. If they smoke in public places, then other people there will also have to breathe in the smoke whether they want to or not. A few times of second-hand smoking will not risk people’s health but if this accumulates, then there will be serious damages to their health. For instance, according to the Health magazine called “Cure,” the possibility of getting cancer or other smoke-related diseases through second-hand smoking is close to that of first-hand smoking. This shows that second-hand smoking should not be considered a light problem, but extremely dangerous health risk. Moreover, smoking in public places increases other people’s chances of smoking themselves. In a cigarette, there is a substance called Nicotine which makes people addicted to cigarettes. So, if people often smoke or breathe in the air that contains Nicotine, then they will be at a higher risk of getting addicted to smoking. Because of this reason, people who have been around smokers usually become smokers themselves. Unfortunately, since there are so many smokers in public places, this risk is high. Also, this will be harmful to people who just quit smoking. They may not be able to resist the familiar tastes of cigarette and even try them again. In order to reduce this risk, there should be a ban for smoking in public places. |
