Instituting bike lanes |
The lecturer explains about drawbacks of bike lanes by giving a example of one city which made bike lanes and removed. This casts doubts on the reading passage's perspectives that bike lanes are advantageous. First of all, bike lanes did not encourage people to use their bikes instead of using their own cars. This happened because commuting by bikes was not an easy task for people, so the number of people who started using bikes increased only less than 1%. Thus, it did not give any positive effects on the environment. This is the response to the reading passage's contention that bike lanes are beneficial to the environment. Secondly, bike lanes often make drivers stressful, angry and upset. This results because the number of car lanes was decreased in order to make bike lanes, even though people rarely used bike lanes. In addition to this, bike lanes caused heavier traffic congestion due to reduced car lanes. This contradicted the reading passage's opinion that bike lanes are advantageous to everyone on the road. Finally, bike lanes increased accidents on the road instead of reducing them. This was due to the fact that bicyclists tended to be careless when they were in bike lanes and bike lanes made drivers hard to stop near the roads. This rebuts the reading passage's claim that bike lanes reduce many accidents involving car and bikes. |
