Promoting free trade has long been the center policy of the U.S. It not only aims for economic development of all countries participating in free trade, but it also plays a role to spread democracy. Basic human rights, individualism and liberalism might spread into countries while having trade as countries would also have cultural exchanges. Then, it is quite reasonable to say free trade could turn countries which are yet politically modernized to be democracy-oriented. In my opinion, however, free trade would not have that sort of benefits as it could further widen gap between the wealth and the poor and it could break up the society.
Free trade could cause polarization between the wealth and the poor, which hinders the full development of democracy. It is true that free trade could bring a tremendous amount of wealth to countries. However, after ostensible development of economy, disadvantages might soon appear. The wealth become wealthier and the poor become poorer. For example, when it comes to Mexico which had free trade agreement (FTA), it seems its economy is highly developed as it is a 13tst most power economic. Foreign investment, increased GDP and all other factors were showing benefits of free trade. Yet, people who were working in agricultural industries collapsed as there was influx of cheap agricultural products from the U.S., and thus unemployment rate has increased. The wealth which already had enough money could invest into various economic sections and gain profit while the poor had no other way but to become poorer. In addition, this situation was directly connected to politic as the political power was centralized to the wealth. Hence, even though Mexico was a democratic country, its democracy did not protect the rights of poor people. It was only a half developed democracy. Therefore, free trade dose not necessarily means spread of democracy as it broadens the gap between the wealth and the poor.
Moreover, it split the society into several as democracy might not fit the countries’ regime or ideology. Democracy is well known as the best ideology, but this could not be applied to all countries. When democracy is spread to those countries through free trade, it could lead to constant political and social brawls. To be more specific, suppose the U.S. is going to have free trade agreement with Pakistan. It would unintentionally import basic rights such as women’s rights, freedom of speech and so on. However, it might be hard for the people to abruptly accept the rights. There are also some people who would accept the rights. Then, they would always have conflicts over the development of democracy. If is ends in full development democracy, the conflicts are worthy, but there are high chances that this could result in genocide or militarism. Hence, there are high possibilities that free trade could not help countries to receive democracy. | |
