If you were asked to send one thing representing your country to an international exhibition, what would you choose? Why? Use specific reasons and details to explain your choice. |
Rock music is considered to be one of the most popular trend throughout the world. Yet, whenever I see the rock performance, I always see how Samool Nori could make better performance, and totally rock the audience. Samool Nori is a traditional Korean performance that involvs the act of dancing, and playing instruments. Samool Nori enables active participation from the audience, and represents Korean culture.
First, Samool Nori interacts with the audience. Most of the well-known museums exhibite substancial amount of artifacts from all over the world. As we walk through the museums, all we see is a precious looking objects sitting inside the glass window, with the little explanation tag attached on side of the wall. Such limitted access is a major drawback that renders the audience to become bored. Showing a real act of Samool Nori, on the other hand, could greatly appeal to most of the audience as the play itself actively interacts with them. For example, my church once held a party where international students got together to celebrate their culture. What surprised me was how Samool Nori has become the most populer event of that evening. It didn't take long for all of us to start dancing, following the playful rythems of Samool Nori. As reaction of audience counts to be one of the most important factor to determine the success of the performance, Samool Nori naturally has a strenght of drawing people's attention.
Furthermore, Samool Nori effectively conveys korean culture through the instruments, the sounds, and the clothings. Samool Nori is a very complex form of performence in which combines sound, and visual at the same time. Samool Nori crews usually wear colorful attires that represent the traditional colors of Korea: red, yellow, and blue. The instruments are also uniquely decented from traditional Korean history, such as Jang-gu, Sogo, Ging, and so on. In this sense, the move, sound, and visual aspects alltogether powerfully represent Korea. One of the stereotype that many Americans have over Korean is that we are very shy, and quiet. Yet, I portray Koreans to be very playful people who know how the sing, dance, and enjoy the moment. Undoubtly, such personalities are very well reflected on Samool Nori.
Representing a county with one object or artifact is almost impossible. However, I would definitely choose Samool Nori as the one best way to introduce Korea. I have a dream that one say Korean culture will widely spread around, and Samool Nori will be performed throughout the entire world.
