In this set of materials, the reading passage and the lecture contrast two politicians, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hemilton, who had opinions that contradict each other. First of all, at the point about what would make the nation more stronger, Jefferson held that United States should be agricultural to prosper. However, Hemilton supported the British economy system -industrial manufacturing. There was also no consensus among them as to trade tariffs system. Such as Bristish, Hemilton believed that the government should lay a heavy tax on the imported goods. Contrastly, 'free trade' was supported by Jefferson, who believed that the nonexistence of protective tariffs would help to maintain low prices of imported goods. Secondly, their opinions on political questions were directly incoherent. Jefferson, who feared the emergence of the strong central gevernment, was the proponent of the strict interpretation of the Constitution, which allows federal government to has specifically granted powers only. Hemilton, however, favored strong federal government and broad Constitution, that is, only specifically granted authorities were available to states. Because of these, Jefferson was called 'Republican' and Hemilton was 'Federalist'. |
