"Being happy with a job is more important than having a high salary." |
Debate over the abnormal preference for high-salary jobs is not new to Korea. Because of westernization, Koreans were starting to lose their Confucianism principles and to be more practical. Therefore, Korean teenagers are likely to choose High-paying occupations rather than low-salary jobs they enjoy. However, for the sake of nations' debelopment and individuals' happiness, the arguement insisted by the author seems quite supportive.
In a national view, people who get jobs which they enjoy are more productive, and able to boost economy. Korea, my country, is small country which is surrounded by strong nations such as Japan and China. Unfortunately, Korea has no natural resources to compete with others, and human resources are undoubtedly important. In a word, quality of work is more important than quantity of work in Korea. According to the study of Seoul National University, 87% of Koreans between age of 20 and 60 said they can do their work more efficiently when they are highly motivated. After FTA(Free Trade Agreement), Koreans are beginning to acknowledge the importance of human resources. To raise high-quality human resources, effectiveness of work is needed. Thus, pursuing only high paying jobs regardless of one's interest has negative effect on country's productiveness and financial state.
For individuals, selecting a job they like rather than high-salary jobs makes them more happier. Some may hold the opinion that person who has a lot of money can be happy in this capitalism society. However, money is not the only factor that determines the satisfaction of one's life. In Korea, there was a woman quit ger high-salary position in a law firm and started to work as a human righst lawyer. Everyone was astonished with her decision but agree with her brave decision to find her real pleasure. She said in an interview, "I always wanted to work for poor people since I was young, but I lost my chance when I choose to work in a big law firm after graduation. Working in the law firm, I found myself stuck in the position which I was not satisfied with. Now I'm happy because I am what I was dreamed of" As her experience shows us, though money is necessary for us to survive and many people are seeking it, the most important thing to human is their own happiness.
Many people would consider money to top priority in their life. However, in choosing a job, they have to think their own fulfilment firstly due to the fact that it would help them to be more productive and delighted. |
