It is crucial for parents to encourage their children to study hard. However, restricting them not to watch television should not be the way to make them study. This is because the television itself can function as a motivator for students to study and also keeping them watching television may arouse their sense of rebellion.
To begin with, as a television has a lot of contents, it not only provides children with some educational information but also motivates them in some aspects. There are educational channels in television that help children to study. Also, even if it is not an educational channel, news or documentary can give children insights and thereby broadening their perspectives on society which will be eventually helpful when studying. Furthermore, watching television can be a reward for their hard working. I want to take my experience as an example. When I was a high school student, I was under too much stress from study and exam. The only way to release my stress was watching TV after finishing all my assignments. It was a kind of reward for myself. By watching TV, I could forget about worries and just enjoy the moment laughing out loud. Furthermore, I liked to watch an audition program which motivate me to study harder. When watching participants who were desperate to win, I felt that I should be like them when studying. My story illustrates the point that watching TV can be a motivator as well as a teacher.
On top of that, restricting children not to watch TV can have a negative impact on them. Teenagers are sensitive with trivial things and just telling them not to do something can trigger them to do something at all costs. Therefore, when parents make children stop watching TV, they will find another way to do something other than studying. What I mean is that this kind of act only worsens the relationship between parents and children. For example, a study was conducted by the Korean Board of Education to determine whether watching TV could affect academic achievement. There were two groups monitored. The first group was formed of students who were told not to watch TV by their parents. The other group consisted of students who had no restrictions. The researchers tracked their study habits and overall grades. What they found was intriguing. The latter group's grade was twice as higher than the former group who were told not to watch TV. This is because TV can function as one of the medias for study. Also, as their parents did not scold them when they were watching TV, their stress level went down which positively affected their study. What is more, the students of the former group find another way that could replace the TV while getting more stress than the latter group. This study demonstrates that keeping children from watching TV can have a side effect.
In a nutshell, children can get both motivation and academic resources which are essential when studying from TV, and also allowing children to watch TV can be beneficial as parent-children coflicts decrease. In this regard, I firmly believe that avoiding letting children watch television just for their study is not a good idea. |
