The reading passage presents several theories about the rapid disintegration of Hohokam. However, the professor rejects to the author’s argument. To begin with, the author points out that Hohokam people were forced to relocate because of powerful floods. In contrast, the professor responds to this statement by saying that it is possible for local peoples to repair the irrigation channels. To explian, if the region had experienced several flooding, indigenous peoples would have recover the channels. Therefore, primitive peoples would not have immigrated to search for new lands to avoid floods. Another point from the reading is that Hohokam society disintegrated due to a deadly epidemic. On the other hand, the speaker make a counterargument to this by stating that when Spain arrived the area, native peoples were disappear already. Moreover, they were widely died by rapid disease but, there is no evidence about large burial site. As a result, an epidemic could not make it possible for Hohokam peoples to rapidly disaster. Finally, the reading passage mentioned that the Hohokam civilization collapsed as a result of revolt. Conversely, the lecturer insist that this statement can be dismissed. Basically, there is no evidence that the local people had a social class. Also, Oral histories are not always trust. That’s why primitive peoples would not have collapsed by internal conflict. | |
