▶ Your Answer :
The reading passage that, in spite of excitement about a manned mission to Mars, it has several problems unsolved. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
Firstly, the lecturer claims that problems derived by dust of Mars are surmountable by sound technology. According to the lecturer, sound waves can overcome both the machinery and health problems. By controlling the pitch of sound waves higher, dust on the spaceships will be blown away and astronauts can also get free of the particles. This challenges the author's point that the planet's dust is insurmountable problem to the machines and the crews.
Secondly, the lecturer mentions that psychological concerns are manageable by various methods. For example, before leaving the earth, astronauts will be trained to manage the psychological problems they can face during the life in universe. Furthermore, even during the travel, they are able to be counseled about those problems by a computer program which is built for the purpose. This casts doubt on the author's claim that crews can not overcome stress derived from the psychological reason.
Lastly, the lecturer states that financial problem can be dealt with international partnership. If several nations collaborate to fund the mission, money for the travel can easily prepared. According to the lecturer, space station was also able to built by the partnership. He elaborates this idea by saying that, in long term, manned mission to Mars will be clearly helpful for the world. This rebuts the authors point that financial burden is impossible to manage because it is too costly and countries won't be willing to pay for it.
