Some
people think that universities should spend same amount of money on sports and
libraries. However, in my opinion, universities' funding should be focused on
libraries more since university is for academics and there are lot of sports
facilities outside the campus
To
begin with, universities are places where people learn and discuss about their
knowledge. That is, universities should concentrate on improving their academic
skills especially putting more money on their libraries. For example, there was
a poll conducted by newspaper columnists in Seoul National University with 300
professors as respondents. The purpose of the survey was to understand the
consensus view about which factor has the closest relation to a university's
academic skills. The majority of respondents ranked how many books that a
university's library has the highest. An overwhelming 60% had responded that
the status of libraries determines the rank of universities. This is because
how good a university library is demonstrates the study atmosphere and the
history of a university, considering that almost all of the universities which
ranked the highest in the world have the best quality of libraries.
On
top of that, students can enjoy sports activity elsewhere. There are a lot of
sports centers or parks near most of the universities, so students have
opportunity to exercise outside of a campus. I will illustrate my experience to
explain this. The university I attended did not have a good sports facility. I
was very disappointed at first since I liked sports a lot. One day, I went to a
park nearby and found a group of young people played tennis. I joined their
group and played tennis together every weekends until I graduated from the
university. I was able to enjoy sports activities even though my university did
not offer a good circumstance.
To
sum up, universities are for people to improve their academic skills and
students can pursue sports activity without universities' funding on sports. In
this regard, I think that university should invest on libraries more than on
sports.
