Large companies take important roles in Korean economy and many economists say that Korean economy could develop so fast based on the swift growth of the large companies. Also most young people want to work for large companies and they even do not apply for a job in small companies. However, I prefer to work for small companies. There are many reasons why I think so, and here I present some of them.
First of all, one of the important characteristics of small companies is their flexibility. A small company is organic and flexible to exterior changes while a large company is systematic and rigid to the changes. This is not just because of the size of a company. A company has its own culture because it is also a kind of society. A large company needs to develop a rigid culture to control many employees to reach a designated goal. On the contary, a small company cannot afford to hire as many people as a large company does and it is able to handle small number of employees without this rigidity. The culture of the company also affects the way to react to novel ideas from interior workers. A large company cannot accept the innovative ideas as easily as a small company does. I want to work for a company which respects my ideas.
In addition, a small company can provide strong relationships between colleques. A company is not only a place for economical or financial activites but also for social activites. People spend at least 8 hours a day on working, which is almost a half of the waking time . Therefore, it is not surprising that more than 70% of Korean people have best friends who work with them. I think people can make solid relationship with other workers when working for a small company. In a large company, people usually work as a part of one great project. They only take certain parts of the undertakings and do not know what other people do, and the perfect system of a large company makes it possible. On the contrary, the worker in a small company should take several parts of different projects at the same time, and they need to communicate with other workers. There is no doubts that these communications can construct close and strong relationships between empolyees and these relationships are important elements of social activites.
It is true that generally people can earn more money when working for a large company than for a small company and it is one of significant benefits of a large company. Howeve,r I firmly believe that advantages of a small company such as flexible culture or atmosphere and firm relationship between workers overwiegh those of a large company. |
