Some people insist that it is important to try new things and take risks because doing the same things cannot provide further development. However, an old proverb such as "no pain, no gain" does not applies only to challeng new things but also to keep doing certain things. I prefer to do what I already can do well. There are many reasons why I think so, here I present some of them.
First of all, people can be experts when they concentrate on one job. When people perform the same thing consistantly, it does not mean that they remain at the same point without further improvement, It implies that they are making a progress in one field and developing as experts. The modern society is so competitive that people have to be specialists not to lose in the competition. And being experts surpass doing certain things just well. When people try new things whenever they think they execute certain things well enough, they cannot be experts in any field. I believe to be specialists in one field, people have to try to do better what they already do well.
In addition, people can broaden their horizons when they keep doing what they already do well. It is true that people can expand their horizons through new things. However, I think it is not the only method and through being experts, people can see a whole new world. Generally experts can have more chances to work and communicate with other experts from various areas and this communication can provide new ideas in totally different way from their own. On the contrary, someone who is not proficient enough and do new things before being experts, can never devise these ideas.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that people have to take risks and challenges in order to develop. However, I do not think new things are the only challenges to people. I firmly believe that performing what people arleady do well can be also a kind of challenge to be experts and to broaden their horizons. |
