In this fast-changing society, the importance of academic knowledge is continuously being impressed. Even in the university, financial department bestow more funds to libraries rather than athletic departments. Some people are claming that university should give athletic departments same amount of fund, and I strongly agree with this idea because sports improve students’ physical health and help them improve social skills.
To begin with, Sports activities enable students to enforce their health condition. It is a well-known fact that exercising improves our health. Actually, a recent studies conducted by Korean Health Organization have indicated that exercises strengthen bones, muscles and other organs in our body. For instance, I have a cousin who was seriously suffering from obesity. In the past, he even could not walk by himself. However, after participating in a university’s jogging program, his condition was getting better and better. In the end, he can now walk or do any activities he could not do. This shows how essential exercise is in our lives. As the old saying “a sound mind in a sound body” goes, I firmly believe that the priority that we have to consider is health problem.
Furthermore, sports foster students’ social skills. I am certain that we can get more mental abilities if we do sports activities, as most of activities require collective effort and cooperation. Moreover, we can learn how to obey the rules through sports. Soccer is a perfect example of this. Without cooperation, a team cannot be the winner of match.
Likewise, these mental abilities are very important in this society. For instance, when people who are not accustomed to obeying others are recruited by company, they are more likely to be fired due to their lack of obedience.
In a nutshell, sports activities benefit students a lot, including improving social skills essential in our lives and enhancing health condition. Thus, university administrators should give sports department the same amount of money as libraries. I am very afraid of that this society covered by academic knowledge would devastate our health and relationship among people.
