It is important to have rules about the types of clothing people are allowed to wear at work and school. | |

It is often said that how people wear (clothing people wear) should not be regulated at their job or school. Some maybe opposed to this idea since uniforms or dress code makes people better more concentrate on their work by reducing time to think of what to wear everyday. However, from my point of view, allowing people to dress according to their preferences is way better than regulating them. This is mainly becuase it improves their creativity as well as productivity.
To begin with, setting no rules for dress code enhances creativity. People show who they are and how they think through their dressing style. People who are neat and clean(tidy) prefer wearing tidy(plain and simple) clothes and someone who is cheerful and active can reflect him or herself by putting on clothes with bright colors . Likewise, people find their identity and learn how they are different from each other by trying to show themselves through clothes. The best illustration is a study measured on high school students in Korea and America. According to the study, Korean students are more conservative and tend to want to grow up with standard ideal person in mind. On the contrary, American students seek to be different from each other and have more creative ideas about how they should lead their lives. This is largely attributted to the fact that Korean students wear school uniforms for six years during the most important stage of the life watching same style of people everyday, while American students get to have chances to practice expressing themselves and learn from others about different styles by not wearing uniforms.
Moreover, allowing people to wear casual clothes raises efficiency. Both studying and working require high level of concentration and these can be maximized when people wear what they think the most comfortable. For instance, at the company that (where) I work for, very strict dress code used to be applied. Office workers could only wear black or grey suits and female employees were only allowed to wear skirts. While it certainly devoted to preventing workers from taking their time for choosing clothes, the company soon had to ease the dress code. The monthly productivity report proved that employees work much less efficiently compared to the past when there was no restriction on clothes becuase wearing suits made long hour work physically tiring. Shortly, the report showed that productivity of workers improved with less regulations on dress code.
To sum up, controling how people wear does not have much positive effects. Rather, minimizing regulations on dress code is wiser becuase it augments one's creativty and work efficiency. On the whole, too much efforts to increase worker's productivity, such as setting rules for clothes, bring about the exact opposite effects.
