Many people regard that parents could not be good teachers. However, I firmly believe that there is no teacher better than parents because they are teaching as examples, and they know their children most.
First of all, parents teach their children as examples. Many researchers report that one of the most effective ways of teaching children is showing good examples what children should follow. However, this is difficult to implement since teachers in school, other than parents, and children do not have much time together, and the students observe the behaviors of their teachers during just a few hours in a day. On the contrary, parents could share most of times with their children, and thereby, they have lots of opportunities to show them their behaviors as good examples. To be specific, even though I had been taught by a school teacher the fable of a Good Samaritan, who helped those in trouble without hoping any financial reward, I had not followed his teaching. But when I saw my father helped the victims of an earthquake occurred in a region near my hometown, I was deeply moved by his good act, and decided to follow his way in my whole life.
Second, parents know their children better than any other teacher. Teachers could realize teaching effectiveness in full range if, they know their students well. To be specific, if a teacher knows the poorest part her students have, she could focus on that part and lead them to correct their weak points. Furthermore, it is necessary for teachers to know what aptitudes and talents their students have when they give academic and career counseling. For example, when my father had taught me mathematics, he could find that I had difficulties especially in solving problems regarding statistics and probabilities, and taught the way how these problems could be treated. Furthermore, during this mathematics tutoring, he found that I had a talent in that filed, and counseled me to choose mathematics as major. With his advice, I chose mathematics as my major when I entered to a college, and right after taking the first course in the college, I realized that it is so interesting that I could continue on this filed.
In sum, though everyone may have different point of view on this issue, I absolutely support the prospective that parents are the best teachers. The rationale behind this is as follows; 1) they could teach children as examples, 2) they know their children's level of understanding, aptitude or talents very well. |
