Many people believe that High school students should be allowed to choose which subjects they will study, saying "special knowledge is more useful than wide knowledge" Although I can understand their position, I think that a benefit of well-rounded study far outweigh that of specialized study. I thus strongly object the idea of choosing which subject they want to study.
First of all, High school students should learn knowledge of various field.
There are lots of problems that can not be solved with few kinds of knowledge.
For example, let's suppose that someone would study about history of ancient times. If he knows a lot about other field , such as culture, art, technology , rather than just history, he can be more comprehensive. Of course, some people might assume that spending time to learn various field is a kind of waste, so it is more efficient to invest time in studying specialized field.
But, High school is not a place where students major in special field. it is a place that they can learn foundation of studying in university. it is enough to study their own major at university. so I insist that high school students should study as many subjects as possible.
In addition, High school students have to associate with various people.
Major fields and interests are different people by people. As the old saying 'bird of a feather flock together' goes, it is clear that the one who has common ground has an advantage to the one who hasn't in associating with someone. There is an example that shows how important having common ground in associating with people is. from my experience, I couldn't hang out with friends who are interested in science field. because I didn't study science enough and only was interested in history or literature. Like my case, if someone concentrated in specific field, he would have difficulty in being harmony with other people. In other words, knowing various field can help social life.
All things considered, It is essential that high school students study many kinds of
subjects. it is so called 'well-round' education. hence, I support the idea of not studying subjects which only students want to study, in order to learn many knowledges and associate with many people well. |
