In Korea, almost 50 percent of men smoke, which means smoking is one kind of leisure activities. Then, it might be rational to say smoking should be allowed in many public places as majority of people enjoy it. However, the fact that many people like it could not justify its uses on public places and office buildings because it has a lot of side effects. To name it, it causes non-smokers to be in a high risk of diseases and many people might be frustrated or disturbed.
When people smoke, they would unintentionally lead non-smokers to be in jeopardy of a variety of diseases. This is because smoke coming out from cigarettes is comprised of a lot of harmful components. If non-smokers breathe the smoke, they would have more chances to get cancer or respiratory diseases than people who do not, or even more than smokers. For example, according to the study conducted by Indonesia University, second-hand smoking has a serious effect on people. As they breathe the smoke of cigarettes without any filtering, they are drinking all harmful gases. As a result, they have roughly 60 percent more chances to get cancer than ordinary people. Moreover, they even have 40 more chances to get smoking-related diseases than smokers. Therefore, by taking this example into account, smoking should be obviously restricted on public places.
In addition, people exposed in smoking in public places or office buildings might go through irritation, frustration and even annoyance. Even though smokers enjoy smoking, the smell and smoke could be frustrating to others. To be more specific, the study surveyed by Korean times showed that most women are reluctant to work in companies that allow smoking in work places. Approximately 30 percent of them said they could not concentrate on their works when some one smoke beside them. About 20 percent of them said smell from cigarettes actually makes them annoyed as it is not appealing. Hence, as public places and office buildings are for every person, ones' interest should not be hindered by smoker's wants to smoke. Therefore, smoking should not be allowed in public places and office buildings.
In conclusion, it is reasonable to say smoking should be permitted in public places and office buildings since it could cause health problems to non-smokers. Also, it could make people feel frustration. As a matter of fact, this could be beneficial for smokers as they could also maintain they health when they follow the rule. |
