▶ Your Answer : The speaker says that universities should spend as much money on sports as they do on libraries. Some people might agree with this assertion and argue that the importance of sports activities cannot be totally overlooked for university students, and they should be equally treated to that of academic work. However, I think that universities with high-quality libraries will benefit more students, so they should firstly spend their money on their libraries, and next spend their money on sports. In other words, they should prioritize the value of libraries to the value of sports. Therefore, I disagree with the speaker. First, universities with up-to-date libraries can allow their students to concentrate on their academic work. Students usually go to libraries when they want to read course materials or find some information on books. If universities renovate their libraries and purchase more books, this effort will bring about a better result to their students. For example, many research teams, including Tokyo Research Center, analyzed data from two groups of university students. One group consisted of students whose universities have the most up-to-date libraries in a nation, and the other group was made up of students whose universities have high-quality sports centers. Interestingly, the researchers found that the former group was more likely to have a higher GPA than the latter. Moreover, students from the first group tended to get professions easily, compared to students from the second group. This implies that being with a renovated library is a key to success, academically as well as professionally. Also, when universities fund to their libraries, it can benefit far more number of students. Every university students are required to read materials and search books to do an assignment. To do this, they usually go to university libraries and spend their time reading books. According to a recent study, nearly every university students use libraries at least once a week, and half of them go to libraries everyday. On the other hand, only a few students use sports centers in their universities. For instance, in my university, most students do not have a keen interest on sports. They usually spend their time studying, not doing any kind of sports activities. Moreover, those who can use a university sports center are limited to students who have some kinds of membership of sports teams such as a football or baseball team. This clearly shows that universities’ funding to libraries will benefit nearly every students while funding to sports activities will positively affect on only a few of them. |
