In today's world, reading a book has become one of the most popular means of enjoying one's spare time. Some people advocate it is not necessary to read the same book twice. However, I firmly believe that people can benefit from reading the same book more than once. The rationale behind this belief is that people can have a better understanding of the book. On top of that, doing so allows people to find invaluable lessons of life from the book.
To begin with, readers are able to have a better interpretation of the book. This is because when they read the book for the first time, they are usually only concentrated on a story-line, so they miss minor descriptions or information from the book which later turn out to be important ideas. To illustrate, when I was reading one of Shakespear's tragedies, Macbeth, I did not pay much attention on the witches' prophecies in the beginning of the book. I just thought that this was how the play began, giving no more meanings than that. So, I just finished the book without realizing that it was one of the most crucial points in the book. I was able to know that the witches’ prophecies were a very important part of the book when I read the book for the second time. It was because Macbeth, who was once a symbol of a brave solider, was ruined by the witches' prophecies that said he was going to be the next king of Scotland. As a result, his excessive ambition led him to the path of evil. If I did not read the book again, I would never have gained a real understanding of the book.
In addition, readers can learn valuable lessons from reading a book more than once. Surely they can learn their own lessons by reading a book for the first time, but they tend to forget them because they have no chance to experience those lessons. However, when they read the book later in their lives, after a certain period of time, they can think of what would they do if they were the characters in a book. This allows them to find the true lessons from a book. To cite a personal experience, reading a bible was such a pain in my neck when I was young. I just had to read it because that was what my parents told me to do. It was apparent that I did not learn any lessons from the book. However, when I read the book again, after I became an adult, I could find some important lessons from the book. Such as Agape spirit, meaning love your enemy, came to me as an essential word.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that it is much more beneficial for people to read the same book more than once. The truth of this argument becomes clear when we consider that readers can have a better appreciation to the book, and also they can learn valuable lessons for their lives. As the popular saying goes, "A book that it is no value to read two times is less than value to read once". Every book deserves to read more than once. |
