It is often said that it is not crucial to know what is happening around the world because the events do not directly affect society. However, I believe that people should know what's going on around the world for two reasons: they can prepare for disasters and they can solve the problem by taking a advanced nation's cases.
To begin with, it is important to know what is happening in the world around us because this can help us prepare for disasters. This is due to the fact that issues such as global warming, poverty, and piracy can only be resolved through cooperation among nations, as we are all connected. Through collaborative effort, we can resolve these problems quicker and prevent them from affecting us in the near future. A good example of this is Tuvalu, a polynesian island nation in the South Pacific that is sinking due to global warming. The water has steadily crept up Tuvalu's shores and now threatens to swallow up the entire nation. Unless we reduce the amount of gas emissions around the world, we will not be able to stop Tuvalu from sinking. Korea, our conuntry, would not be exempted from the disastrous effects of such an event. By taking quick action, we can prevent the disaster from impacting us.
In addition, policies created by another nation can be a good example that we can use to solve our problems, It is obvious that we are facing more and more problems, including Internet hacking, pollution and identity theft. By taking an advanced country's case as an example, we can solve these problems and develop our nations. For instance, Pittsburgh, a city in the United States, made public transportation free in the late 20th centuty. It resulted in an increase in people who took buses and the subway and thus in less air pollution. Even though it seems not directly related to our city, Seoul, we can adapt such a policy and breath fresh air. In brief, the more information we obtain from other countries around the globe, the more our soceity will become better because we can prepare for disasters as well as solve morden problems by copying good policies from advanced nations.
All in all, I strongly belive that although events around the globe seem not to be related to us directly, we should still know about them. | |
