As the world became globalized, the importance of learning English seems prima facie sector of our lives in these days. In 1970s, Korean government made a educational policy of learning english as a requirement in high school. At that time, there were lots of debates of the necessity of learning English in Korean schools. However, todays Korean people argue whether kids should learn English in kindergartens. I disagree that kids in kindergartens must be taught English
To begin with, learning second language causes lots of unintentional side effects. In Korea, most parents let their kids study English mandatorily, expecting for their kids to have better English skills than others. However, kids are too immature to learn second languages. They do not even know their mother tongue fully and try to learn another languages. In this case, the result is obvious. Later, they will get confused with what their true mother tongues are, ending up with having unstable minds.
Furthermore, learning English in kindergartens will make Korean cultures depleted gradually. Even in these days, it is no doubt that American cultures try to dominate Korean cultures. If kids are taught English at their young age, later they will be accustommed with English as well as its culture. This will result in diminishing Korean traditional cultures. The worst, Korean people will confront the problem of neo-colonialism ultimately.
To sum up, learning English might seem a effective way to learn English. However, learning English at young age bears many risks inside. It will cause korean kids to suffer fluctuation of their minds. Also there is a high possibility of being dominated by American cultures. In a nutshell, Korean should have their cornerstone- learning Korean first and then learning English later when they are mature. |
