Few would deny that children have more chances to efficiently receive education such as learning foreign languages. This actually has been specified from many studies that children have innate abilities accept, utilize and store knowledge in brain better than adults. Then, it is quite rational to say children should start formal education as fast as possible. However, in my opinion, there are other ways to educate children, and playing could fit into that category. That is, children should play at their early age as they could learn social skills and ethics through playing.
When children play with their family or friends, they are able to gain practical social skills. Playing could comprise of many activities such as simply watching TV to playing sports or board games. Among many, participating in outdoor activities, especially soccer, basketball or baseball, could encourage children to learn how to cope well with their fellows. To be more specific, there is a boy who is going to play soccer with his friends. Soccer is a sport that needs cooperation of players. Then, if the boy wants to win the game, he would realize he could not always insist other friends to follow his plan. He often has to give up his intention, and should pass a ball to team players even though he wants to dribble the ball by himself. Thus, it could say the process teach children how to cooperate well with others, which is an important skill when living in the society. Therefore, when it comes to vital social skills, children should spend time on playing, rather than taking formal education.
Also, playing could teach children about ethics or moralities. Some might consider playing as useless when compared to formal education as it neither gives knowledge nor instruction. However, the opinion is not seeing the deeper side of playing. In fact, it gives far-reaching education: the rules of life that children should accord. For example, suppose there is a group of children playing a board game named Monopoly. It could be regarded as a simple game, but it has a lot of rules that children have to follow. First, even though children want to win the game, they should not cheat. Second, there is a certain process to play a game. Hence, they should not interrupt no matter how much they want to do, or how much they want to win. Third, if they want to joyfully play the game, they should be respectful to all members. By following overall rules, children will soon realize what the ethics or moralities are such as not to cheat. Therefore, it is imperative for children to learn through playing. In conclusion, children should have time to spend on playing as they could gain social skills and instructions of life including ethics and moralities. As a matter of fact, importance of playing is sometimes neglected by parents as it has nothing to do with academic success. However, playing could give long-term teachings to children |
