Oprah Wanffrey once said friends are meant to one and another no matter how different they are. Likewise, friends might be one of the most important parts of life, and it is enough to say that friends are life-long partners. In my opinion, however, if I have to choose between friends who are similar to me or who are not, I would choose the latter ones. This is because I could gain social skills and broaden my perspective.
By having relation ships with friends who have different characteristics with me, I could get a lot of social skills. When I call others as friends, I usually try as much as possible to understand and respect them. In other words, I learn how to cope with unfavorable, or a variety of personalities of friends while interacting with them. For example, I tend to make friends who have totally different features with me. As I am passive, I try to make friends who are active. In the process of maintaining friendship, I and my friends go through some difficulties as our personalities do not fit to each other. However, we not only try our best to understand each other, but we actually do our best to learn from each other's characteristic. As a result, I have no difficulties on cooperating with active people. The social skill I gain, which might be particularly important while living in the society, is definitely beneficial to me. Therefore, it is preferable for people to make friends who are dissimilar to them.
In addition, I could have a wide point of view by having friends who have dissimilar personalities, perspectives or features with them. Under the precondition that friends have different characteristics, there are a lot of chances that they might also have different views toward the world. Thus, while interacting with them, I could broaden my perspective. To be more specific, suppose there are two people who are friends. Both of them have quite different perception on environmental issue. The person A asserts that protecting environment should be applied to every country. The person B states that preserving the nature is the responsibility for developed countries. In this situation, there is no doubt that friends could gain different views toward the issue. Hence, as I could learn or get a variety of perspectives toward the world, I should have friends who are different with them. In conclusion, it is better to make friends who are dissimilar to me as I could learn social skills and broaden my perspective. As a matter of fact, friends who could not be detached from my daily life are most important to me. |
