Parents might have a common thought: the more their children study, the more they would learn. Thus, some parents, especially those living in Korea, are delighted to let children have daily homework from their teachers. However, having daily homework dose not necessarily means achieving academic success. In fact, this could not be as beneficial as parents think as students might be too overwhelmed from homework and they might not have enough time to devote for themselves. If there is lots of homework that students have to do, they might feel burden from it, causing their productivity to decrease. A purpose of homework is to help students to thoroughly go through lectures or topics they learned in school. However, when they have to do too much homework, they would rather try to rush to do it, neither concentrating on it nor trying to deeply understand it. This would end in nothing more than a time-consuming work. To be more specific, suppose there is a student who have to read 30 pages of book named Wealth of Nation written by Adam Smith per day as homework. For several days, students might be able to focus on the book and try to understand it. After few days, he might be overwhelmed from the book as the content of it would become harder and have to understand a large amount of information. Eventually, he would not try to understand it, but he would just passively read the books to finish his homework. Therefore, students might not be able to be as productive as they could when they have daily homework. Moreover, when students have to do daily homework, they might have less time to spend for themselves such as playing with their friends. It is a common thought that it is beneficial for students to find their talents as well as broadening their social networks by interacting with friends. These are particularly important as it is a path for students to be well-developed adults. However, they might fail to do it if they stick in their homes to do their home works. For example, people might be familiar with adults who have no ability to cooperate with others due to lack of social skills. According to study conducted by Korean Times, roughly 40 percent of them had to be isolated from society because their parents lead them to do studying in their home every time in the early age. Even though they were knowledgeable and intelligent, there were just fool adults as they had no way to express their passion and abilities in the society. This could be also applied to students who have to daily homework. Hence, daily homework are not necessary for students, actually it could cause problems.
In conclusion, daily homework is not necessary for students as they could not be productive when doing it and they might not have enough time to use for themselves including cooperating with their friends. It might be better for them to voluntarily do studying that they want, not forcing them to do it in the name of homework. |
