Q. 학교에 새로온 학생을 위해 학교가 할 수 있는 건?
When people are exposed to new environments, they usually become intimidated and frequently suffer until they fully adapt to the surroundings. Going to a new school is as hard as moving to another country. There are new friends, new teachers, new everything. However, with just a slight helping hand offered by the school, the new kid will surely adjust well to the new school. In my opinion, schools should help new students by handing out packets regarding school policies, asking a student who has been attending that school to help the new student out, and preparing some activities to solve the awkward relationships between the new student and others.
First of all, students should be previously informed about the school’s policies and expected behaviors by a packet regarding those materials. Schools should prepare ahead a list of things that new students should be aware of or rules that they should obey. Without any information, the student will be very confused and feel more intimidated, realizing that he is an outsider of the school. For example, when I first moved to my current neighborhood and started going to school, I didn’t really know anything about my new school. I remember being scared and frustrated because I expected everything to be fairly different compared to my former school. However, my homeroom teacher gave me instructions on how to behave or dress, so I was very relieved and I felt like I was really part of the school.
Moreover, the school should help the new student by assigning a ‘buddy’ that would help the student out in the new environment. The ‘buddy’ should be a student who has been going to that school for a while, and knows much about it. For instance, when I first came to my school, my homeroom teacher also assigned me a friend, who is currently my best friend, to show me around the school and help me find the classrooms for music and arts. In Korea, every subject is studied in one room, so I didn’t have to worry about moving around the school every time period, but I wasn’t informed where to go to enroll in music or art classes. In those times, my new friend really gave me a big helping hand. Through her, I learned a lot about the school and gained confidence to adjust to the new surroundings.
Furthermore, teachers should prepare some special activities to help the student’s adjusting process. It could be anything that would get rid of the ‘invisible emotional wall’ between the new student and the rest of the classmates. Back to my own experience, my homeroom teacher wanted me to get familiar with all the classmates in a quick time, before we go on a summer vacations. So on Saturdays, our class played a weird game which everybody had to introduce themselves in front of the classroom in a funny position. It was very embarrassing at first, but through that game, I learned everybody’s names and they learned mine. I think it was a very brilliant choice that my homeroom teacher made.
To sum up, I believe that the school’s role in the process of the new student’s adjustment in the new school is very important. Through the methods I mentioned above, I could easily adjust myself to the new environments without much suffering. Now I help a friend who recently came from another country to make her feel home at our school. I believe that the most essential thing would be a kind, warm-hearted minds to accept the new individual among ourselves.
