It is a widely held understanding that university students should have to carefully plan and arrange their classes as it would significantly affect their knowledge and other abilities required after graduation. Some people argue that students should focus on classes that cover a specific area, especially on the subjects directly related to the major. However, it is clear that students who have knowledge on diverse fields will be able to perform better than ones whose knowledge is narrow and limited to a specific domain. This is not only because taking various classes would help students find their real talent and interest, but also because it will help one performs better in many areas.
By taking many different classes, it is more likely for students to realize what is their real talent and interest. Looking around, we can easily encounter university students who still do not know which kind of job they will have and even which area they will do major in the university. This is because they still do not have as many chances in their lives as they can decisively choose, since they had to spend almost all of their times to study the school works and prepare university entrance. The story of my two university friends, Jane and John, would illustrate this best. When we were all freshman, none of us was certain whether our major, computer science, is suitable for us or not. Yet, Jane took very diverse classes from economics to modern music as well as computer science. Then, at the third year in the university, she finally realized that she is interest in the composing and manipulating music using computer programs. Whereas John just had concentrated on taking classes of his major without certainty. But, unfortunately when he found that he could not consistently do well in and may not suitable for the computer work, it seemed too late to change his major, since he was already senior and even he still did not know to which major he will turn. This is not the only reason why student should take various classes.
Evidently, students who have knowledge and experiences in a variety of fields would outperform over ones who have limitedly exposed to knowledge and experience. This is shown in the contemporary social phenomena that many fields including advertisement, engineering, entertainment, etc., are finding people with diverse backgrounds. It is clearly due to their outperforming ability. To illustrate, many research results in the
To be honest, I could not deny admitting that by concentrating on classes of a special area, student can be an expert faster than one who takes many different courses. Yet, in the long run it is clear that that exposing one toward many different knowledge and experience will help them find where their strength and talent is and perform better in the upcoming era. Thus, the importance of multidisciplinary education must not be overlooked and furthermore universities should mandatorily build their curriculum so as for students to experience more diverse domains
