There has been an argument regarding the issue that assessment of teachers should be done by students. Some people may argue that it can have a positive impact on students by allowing better quality of education to be made. Although it may be true in some respects, I still believe that it is not advisable to let students to evaluate their own teachers because students are not grown up yet to make proper decisions and teachers' authority can be challenged.
To start with, students might not make proper evaluation. This is because students are not capable of making wise decisions because they are not grown up yet. Their ability to make a prudent decision without personal prejudice is not perfect and that is why student is being taught by teachers. Also, their decisions can be made based on experience they were scolded by the teacher. Punishment is also a part of education and some students would not distinguish their personal feelings about the teacher from his ability as a teacher. Before I transferred to current school that I go to, I attended one of several private schools in Korea. There, students were asked to write their own opinion about the teachers that they had taught by. There was a English Writing teacher, named Eric Pollock, and though the teacher was really famous for his creative way of teaching, many of my friends confessed that they intentionally wrote about him badly. The reason was that they were scolded by him for using his personal computer without permission.
Furthermore, teachers' authority can be challenged. Generally, a lecture should be given under a condition of students' obedience to teachers. This is because, once they start to be disobedient to teachers, the lecture would not given in a way that the teacher intended to be. Being asked to judge their teachers, student would consider their teachers as an employee that they pay for. Then the student would not feel any necessity to be obedient to their teachers and the atmosphere of the class would be less instructive. As a matter of fact, the study conducted by Korea University in Korea shows that highschools that are practicing such regime, shows small rate of students to go on to the next stage of education. When asked about their teaching, the teachers replied that they cannot teach according to their own curriculum because students hardly listen to them. Thus, letting students to assess their teachers would make teachers' authority to be challenged and make teachers hard to teach.
To conclude, I firmly believe that student should be asked to judge their teachers. This is because students would not be able to make decisions. Also, such system would detrimentally affect class atmosphere by making students to be disobedient to their teachers. | |
