Most people might be familiar with a phrase 'the more, the better'. This might be natural as two is better than one. However, the phrase implies that there are a lot of possibilities that people always pursue for more things rather than satisfying with what they have. To name the two cases, people tend to desire for more money and better life.
People always want to have more money than they currently have. Mostly, people usually set up goals to earn certain amount of money such as they want to have 20 million dollars as an annual pay. Then, they should be happy when they achieve the goals. However, many studies reveal that no matter how much money people earn, they are still unhappy on their wages. For example, according to the study conducted by Korean Times, people who are poor are actually happier than people who are rich. Almost 40 percent of Koreans who earn less than 10,000 dollars per month said they are happy. On the other hand, roughly 60 percent of people who earn more than 50000 dollars per month ironically said they are unhappy. Many say this is resulted from people's persistent desire for more money. Hence, it is quite rational to say people are never satisfied with what they have.
Moreover, people constantly try their best for better lives. One the reasons why human society could be rapidly developed are due to people's need for more convenient and comfortable lives. Some scholars even said ' the need of people actually burgeon the whole parts of society including democracy or socialism. As a matter of fact, this could be seen in every place. Many people could experience that there are lots of new television sets on department stores. Unlike the past, there are a variety of kinds of TV with various shape, size and functions. Moreover, new TV comes out and old-fashioned TV disappears promptly. In other words, people's demand for better TV stimulated companies to develop better one. Therefore, as people want to have better lives such as watching better TV sets, it could be said that people are never gratified on what they have.
In conclusion, people are never satisfied on what they have as they are always in needs for more money and better lives. However, if they want to gain true happiness, they should try as much as possible to control their desire for more things. |
