Students who have just graduated from high school dream of campus-lives that they choose courses which are suit their tastes and complain about the situation that they are not allowed to select their own subjects. I strongly believe that schools made right decisions about the schedule of first-year students for the following significant reasons.
First of all, there are several important basic courses that is related to their majors. If first-year students do not take those courses, it could be a big problem. This is because students are not prepared for corresponding courses by not taking them. First-year students, who have just entered schools, do not know the importance of taking them and most of them are likely to make mistakes in choosing subjects by taking courses that is interesting to them. From my own experience, when I entered my school, I was interested in learning other languages such as English and Chinese. Therefore, I planned to take 3 language courses during first semester even though my major was electric engineering. However, my school did not provide chances of choosing courses. After I became a sophomore, I realized that our school made right decision for first-year students because I found myself was able to understand following subjects without any trouble by having knowledge from basic courses that our school provided. In this sense, I think the policy of giving first-year students the same courses is better for them.
Also, it provides first-year students with chances of getting along with. The common interests among students are making friends when they entered in the school. Allowing students to have the same class schedule can give them environment of being closer to each other. While taking same courses, they can meet the same-year students regularly. Not only that, through having time to do projects or group studies together, they can develop their friendship. In my case, I met one of my best friends when I was a first-year student. According to our schools' policy, all the first-year students were required to take the same courses. As a same group of the experimet class, we put all our efforts into it. It was frequent to struggle for accurate results of experiment all night. Having such time together for same goals of good grades, we were able to become closer and we are best friends now. Likewise, letting first-year students to have the same class schedule helps them gives opportunity of making friends.
In sum up, I firmly believe that it is better for first-year students to take the same courses. This is becausethey can not only grasp knowledge for following subjects , but also make friends easily. Therefore, I think that schools should provide them the same class schedules.
