It is always difficult to fathom what others think, but my opinion
in regard to the given topic is adamant. I believe that hiring more teachers to
have fewer students in each class is the most effective way for the following
reasons.
First of all, if there are fewer students in class, they can benefit
from individualized education and perform better. To be more specific, in a
crowded classroom, teachers have no choice but to teach for the students on the
average level. However, if there are less than 20 students in one classroom,
teachers will be able to educate students differently according to their
education levels or characteristics. For example, a student who have a poor
writing skill can get a focused intervention related to how to spell words
correctly or how to write an essay logically. On the other hand, a student who
shows outstanding achievement related to math and science, teachers can give
special education for the children to realize his or her talents. In this way,
having fewer students in class is beneficial to all students. Recent research
conducted by a renowned professor named Adam Smith from Pittsburgh University
indicates that elementary school which had less than 15 students each class
showed better performance in the general academic test than other school that
had more than 40 students each class. Also, it has been found that the higher
accomplishment was due to the individualized special education that schools
which had fewer students was able to offer. On the other hand, teachers who had
more than 40 students in their class answered that they weren't able to use
efficient teaching skills because of the large number of students. As a result,
they had no choice but stick to the traditional teaching methods. Likewise, his
research proves that my argument is compelling.
In addition, having fewer students in a
class enables teachers to pay more attention to the interactions between
students and find out any socio-emotional factors that can harm students' academic
achievement. It is clear that students who are depressed or getting bullied
cannot focus on studying. However, if teachers detect those students at an
early stage and take appropriate actions, this problem can be alleviated.
According to a private survey conducted in an elementary school, a teacher
answered that she was able to find out who was being bullied in her class
easily when there were 13 students in her class. Also, she responded that if
she had had more students to care about, she might not have recognized the
difference in her class. On the other hand, one of professors majoring in
developmental psychology argues that if children under 4-year-old have to spend
time more than 4 hours a day without their parents, their emotional development
can be somewhat stunted. Therefore, having fewer students is advantageous
because it helps to reduce social or emotional problems in class.
To sum up, I believe my explanations above sufficiently proves the
advantage of hiring more teachers and having fewer students in a class.
Obviously, the significance of individualized education and teachers' increased
attention to their students' socio-emotional problems cannot overemphasized
enough.
