▶ Your Answer :
It is worth having
discussion over whether history and literature are more important school
subjects than science and mathematics, since the resource for education is too
limited to treat every subject equally. Some people might argue as if former
subjects should be treated more important than latter ones. However, I am
convinced that history and literature are not more important than science and
mathematics, with the consideration of following reasons. History and
literature are difficult to be educated with general standards, and science and
mathematics are closely related to the essential characteristics of modern
society.
First,
there could be hardly criteria to produce the standard course for history and
literature. Two subjects, which belong to the field of humanities, are prone to
be recognized differently by person. In other words, these tend to be either
subjective or emotional. For example, sometimes there could be controversial questions
like “How can we estimate Barack Obama’s administration?” or “What do you feel
about feminist poems in Korean literature in late 2010s?” Among the agents
around the school, there would be barely any compromise about how much school
can handle regarding these issues.
Moreover,
science and mathematics have become more important than before as to live in
the world of today. Even in the past, science and mathematics were crucial
because these were the keys to develop logical thinking. Now computer exists
almost everywhere, such as home, children’s school and parents’ office. In this
degree of digital society, science and mathematics are necessary for students
in order to know the basic principles under the world.
To
sum up, history and literature can cause everlasting debates, while science and
mathematics are closer to the essence of society these days. For all these
reasons, I am of the opinion that history and literature are not more important
than science and mathematics.
