As a rule of thumb, some people might think that business should do anything they can do to earn money while others do not think as like that. From my point of view, I would say that business should consider not only profit but other’s concern. It is based on following two reasons. Firstly, in most case, this raise the question of ethics. Modern society is comprised of diverse groups’ own morality and right such as the nation’s law, corporation’s gain, international organization’s world stability and non-governmental organization’s society development. So acknowledging other’s price is important to being respected. By the way, parts of corporation ethics violate this rule. In all likelihood, if it were not for regulations, companies would spoil today’s psychological foundation. For example, the United Nations researchers looked into causes of man-made industrial accidents in the Industrial Revolution from small to large things. There were diverse causes but in fact most of them were originated from extreme pursuit for profits. In the process, reducing costs and maximizing profits are the most significant factors. Employers reduced essential safety charges for civil rights and exploited workers over working hours. As a result, tired workers could not control risks and possibility of accidents. Secondly, not controlled companies’ activities will harm humanity’s long-term benefits and sustainable development. They are interrelated with environments which are easy to destroy and hard to recover. From economical views, business’s goal is making maximum short-term profits. There are many ways to increase short-term benefits that are not good for public and ecosystem. Naturally long objectives are easily disregarded or treated contemptuously. For instance, my logic class professor told me about one theory named the Tragedy of the commons. It is related to developing country’s economy problems. In the Tragedy of the commons, at the beginning, some people fed their livestock on the common land. Soon, all farmers fed their stocks on that place not to use their own’s. At last, public land’s grass exhausted. It matches to our environmental problems with short-term businesses. Developing countries resource problem is same. Although construction business needed a lot of materials, developing countries implemented indefinite period development works. In this way, all earth’s materials will be burned out. Briefly, enterprise should control themselves rather than do anything they can. This is supported by the fact that it raises ethic and resource problems. If not, posterity will inherit worse periods. |
