▶ Your Answer :
We all learn constantly throughout our
lifecycle. We go through elementary school, middle school and high school. Some
even pursue further education at university and late learners attend open
university. As we learn throughout our life, I think it is better to learn many
academic subjects in schools for the following reasons. First, we need various knowledge as we
pursue our life. Life if full of unexpected events and it is better to have
knowledge in a wide variety of fields. I have a personal experience a couple of
years ago when I was able to fix a fan because I studied electronics in school.
When I learned electronics in school I never thought it would be any useful.
But because I had basic knowledge in electronics, I could fix it instead of
throwing it away. Second, work environment requires a wide
variety of skills. One may argue that special skill is essential to get a job.
But as I work for the company, I have realized a wide experience counts more
than a special skill. To be specific, a banker needs knowledge not only in
accounting but also in all industries from farming, electronics, shipbuilding
and so on. This is because a banker needs to conduct credit research when he
makes a loan to such companies. Therefore, a person with wide knowledge would
be more effective in a work environment.
Steve Jobs once gave a speech about "connecting
the dots". He learned calligraphy as well as other subjects when he was
young. At that time, he never thought it would be any helpful in his life. But
later on he was able to design beautiful fonts at Apple as a CEO of the company
because he had knowledge on it. This is why I believe that learning broad
subjects is better because no one knows where life is leading to. By having knowledge
in a wide variety of subjects, we can pursue a better life.
